Dane, as he insisted I call him now, took me to the fanciest hotel I’d ever been to. Seattle was a three hour ride away and as soon as we’d left the hospital, we drove straight up here, checking into the Four Seasons.

I had my own room, but he rarely left me alone.

I hated that I couldn’t say goodbye to Ma or Bessie, or to Addy, or even to the Captain and all my friends. Dane had given me a little hope, talking throughout the ride to Seattle, assuring me that I would be one of the strongest competitors and my chances of winning the full five million was astronomical. He’d convinced me that with a little luck, I’d be back home and sharing my winnings with my loved ones in just a fews days.

After the show aired, he said I’d be a huge star, that my face would be instantly recognizable, that I’d be a household name, not to mention rich beyond my wildest dreams.

I tried not to doubt him. I tried not to get discouraged when I couldn’t walk more than a few minutes before needing to sit down again. And Dane was exhausting, always talking a mile a minute, never slowing down, a constant slew of details about the TV show pouring from his lips. And when he wasn’t talking, he was making me walk, or stretch.

Throughout it all, he ordered room service and take out from the best steakhouses in the city, but he never ate with me. When I asked for seafood, craving lobster and shrimp, he told me steak would be better. He said the iron would give me the best blood counts and make me stronger, or something like that…

I wasn’t entirely sure what he was talking about, or why all this fuss was necessary, but at this point, I’d come too far not to trust him. I kept my eye on the prize and did whatever he told me to. It wasn’t difficult. My strength was increasing every hour, it seemed.

When I wasn’t walking or exercising or eating, I was resting, or getting massages in my suite. One day, he’d even sent a man up to give me a haircut, which I thought was absolutely ridiculous, but Dane insisted — saying I’d thank him later when I saw myself on television.

At night, we’d stroll down to the hotel bar and drink the most expensive bourbon they had. I tried to pay for some of it, but he never let me. He was generous, kind, encouraging and charmingly funny, if a little odd.

He told me he was forty-five, ten years older than me, but when he spoke, regaling me of stories of his youth, he sounded as if could have been a hundred years old. He seemed to have an in-depth knowledge of history and a keen understanding of the human mind.

He was quite a fascinating man, to be frank.

I grew to like him, which made me trust him even more.
